When perfume meets with photographer, it can be more than just pack shot. Pazu Chan, raised and bred in Hong Kong, has recently presented his photography exhibition ‘Perfume: A Pazu Chan Photography Exhibition’ at Parfumerie Trésor, to explore inner sentiments through the pictorial formation of perfume.
Remember “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”, a movie describes a strangely detached boy with superhuman sense of smell but without odor of his own at birth. As he is totally infatuated with a girl by scent, he is being a notorious murderer to collect scents by the desire to recreate the girl’s aroma. The movie sounds insane? Aroma, sex and desire are exactly the impressions which Pazu hopes to express through scent and imagery.
With sex and desire as the theme, Parfumerie Trésor’s attic seems to be the perfect match of this exhibition. The interior design of the attic is retro and classic with seductive red wallpaper reminds people of the Moulin rouge in France. Different from the cancan dancers who are all female, Pazu spent a few months to find his model – a male modern dancer. ‘Comparing with female, naked male body is competitive neutral with the combination of soft and strength. Yet it is difficult to find someone who is willing to be a nude model in Chinese society and has the ability to present the essence of the theme with movement of dance. Modern dancer can easily use their movement of dance to present the expression I want, with little instruction. I prefer these kind of interactive over enforcing the model with particular pose.’ Pazu said.
In addition to the element of dance, the goat mask also has its special expression, ‘It is a symbol of sex in the Western.’ The six photography and perfumes represent six kinds of feelings: passion, intensive, heavy, seductive, painful, ambiguous…or more. Imagery and perfume, which plays the leading role in this exhibition? Literally, both are equally important, the combination use feelings and impressions to create stories.
