2014 National Geographic Photography Contest Results Tell Stories with Photographs

Grand Prize and People Winner

Brian Yen, Hong Kong

“A Node Glows in the Dark”

Following the announcement, there are feedbacks criticizing the photo. In fact, in the perspective of editorial photography, photography is to capture the decisive moment, as long as the subject of the photo is clearly expressed, it is valuable even if it’s snap shot.

Grand Prize winner Brian Yen was on a train ride at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park when he took the photo. Under dim light, a lady concentrated on her glowing smartphone seem to indulge in her own world makes a distinctive contrast to the rest of the passengers.

Brian Yen took this photo with a digital camera, proving that the ability to capture the right moment is far more important than the equipment used.

Caption is the key of a good Phot Essay. Brian Yen describes his photo as follow, “In the last ten years, mobile data, smartphones and social networks have forever changed our existence. Although this woman stood at the center of a jam-packed train, the warm glow from her phone told the strangers around her that she wasn’t really there. She managed to slip away from “here” for a short moment; she’s a node flickering on the social web, roaming the Earth, free as a butterfly. Our existence is no longer stuck to the physical here; we’re free to run away, and run we will.”

After reading this, does the photo look more misty and sci-fi to you?
