Our clients’ recognition and appreciation constantly remind us not to only focus on beautiful designs but cater to our clients’ needs and be humble. The year-long project Ear Up Music Global 18/19 was one of the important milestones of last year, and definitely one of our favourites. From the leaflet, folder, booklet to other event collaterals, we poured our heart and soul to make sure everything we made translates the nature and image of the programme well.
About the Program
Ear Up Music Global is a music project scheme that aims to further incubate young Hong Kong music talents by offering them an opportunity to perform on the global music stage. Music units of the 18/19 Program had taken part in 4 different overseas music festivals following their mentors and built networks with international music talents.
The music world is full of possibilities. It is made for everyone to venture into it and to push existing boundaries. This is what we had in mind when we created the key visual for the Program. In our designs, we went for something that allowed us to deliver a work that reflects the versatility of music and the Program. First, we put together a fresh, reinvigorating colour scheme that incorporates 4 colours (the Program’s house colour mint green, mustard yellow, black and grey), with each colour representing a country that the participants would visit. On top of that, we had come up with three types of geometric shapes, circle, square and triangle, and a set of patterns. These visual elements were spread across the layouts in free forms to create vibrancy and flexibility. They help reflect the diversity of music the participants have to offer.
The folder represents the Program as a whole. It showcases all the key visual elements. The geometric shapes spice up the background, creating a free flow that is pleasing to the eyes. The letters ‘EAR UP MUSIC GLOBAL’ are designed in double lines and come in the 4 key colours to make the design shine.
Each music unit is represented with a distinctive promotion leaflet that promotes their music and philosophy. We were involved in the production of the leaflets, from generating creative ideas, design to printing. We were also in charge of the photo shoots for certain music units. Before we started designing, we drew inspirations from the units’ philosophies and music so that we could create a design that represents the unit well. Each leaflet not only incorporates the key visual elements but also has its own unique characteristics just like the music units do.
The booklet serves as a summary of the Program, putting together the profiles of the music units and the reviews of the music festivals the music units participated in. The booklet was distributed at the concert held in the final phase of the Program. Each music unit owns a two-page profile in the booklet. The design of the two pages was originated from their leaflet to create a consistency.
It is our great pleasure that our design crafted for Ear Up Music Global 18/19 had won the Astrid Award 2020 Honour Prize in the Non-Profit Organisations category. Receiving this acclaimed award definitely encourages us to work harder in the future to bring all of you more stunning and one-of-a-kind work.
About the Astrid Awards: The program is an international recognised awarding body that is established to celebrate and reward the best in international design communications. The ASTRID Award symbolizes the stellar qualities of creativity, craft, innovation and originality in design. In the 2020 Astrid Awards, 288 entries from 11 countries were evaluated by 50+ designers and creative directors from around the world.
