Joan Cornellà in the Gallery

The exhibition of Joan Cornellà is over.

The exhibition went viral in town and the tickets were sold out quickly. A friend who visited on 18 Jun ended up queuing for 45 minutes even with an advanced ticket. I visited on 25 Jun and only got to spend 5 minutes inside the gallery.

I was attracted by the sign below near the entrance. It was written by Hong Kong style. Did the show hurt you? I thought you won’t come if you got hurt. Or you didn’t know you have been hurt.

The bio of Joan Cornellà was printed on the big display board in Cantonese, buzzwords and even foul language (this must be specially made for Hong Kong). You can tell they tried to ignore the “rule” of arts, however the introduction is too straight forward when comparing with the irony style of Joan Cornellà.

There were totally 32 works exhibited. 10 of them were six-frame comic bordered with frame; Another 10 were unframed and there were also 4 large and 8 small individual illustrations. They were all given a title which I personally think it narrow audience’s imagination.

Unless you are not the die-hard fans, you must have already seen the exhibited pieces online. But it doesn’t matter as the visitors were more entertaining than the exhibition itself.

This was the spotlight of the exhibition The netizen called it “flycatcher”.

As everyone know, the works of Joan Cornellà are irony. Selfie is one of the weird things in his mind. There is another one of his work about selfie below.

There is always people willing to do silly things and bring proud of it. They took selfie in front of the “flycatcher” and checked-in on Facebook. I am afraid I will not be sharing these photos here.

Selfie, it maybe just a symbol. What Joan Cornellà trying to tease may not be selfie itself. It can be all kind of weird and violative things in our city, like the people lying by the pole in MTR train; the one who trim his nails in restaurant; who queue up for two hours to buy “buy one get one free” ice-cream; and also who defecate in public… Those kill  animals just for fun and show of on internet. Even thought they were despised by the world, they just don’t care and continue.

Some people didn’t take selfie but demanded their friend to take photos of them in front of every single works, one with no pose, one that copying the pose in the work; retaking another one because the last wasn’t good enough…

There was souvenir counter in the gallery.

Queue up. Take photo. Buy souvenir.

No one remembered there was a lucky draw, including me.

When I left the gallery, there was still a long queue. How long did they wait? Let me tell you by the video below.

The video was taken by a friend. “Don’t you scared they will bit you up?” I asked.

“This is Joan Cornellà style!” He said.

“I believe there is an equality to all humanity. We all suck.”
